Chapter Fifteen

On the way to my car, we saw Hattie walking across the parking lot.

“Willa, stop for a minute.” Hattie changed direction and headed toward us. “I thought you’d want to know that Manuel wasn’t arrested. He was just brought in for questioning.”

That was a relief. “But that was on Saturday, wasn’t it?” I said.

“I know, but I just now remembered to tell you. It didn’t seem that important for you to know.”

It didn’t seem that important, and yet she went out of her way to tell me while I was with Tommy. Sometimes I think Hattie just made excuses to come and talk to Tommy, as if she didn’t see her enough. Everyone should be so lucky as to have a grandmother that loved them as much as Hattie loved Tommy.

“But Manuel still wasn’t at work today. I didn’t see him anywhere,” Tommy said.

We walked to the car and stood at our respective doors. Hattie stood on the passenger side next to Tommy. “I told him to take the day off. It was a stressful weekend, and he needed some time for himself. He never takes time off.”

“That’s the truth. That was nice of you, Gran.” Tommy leaned in and gave Hattie a hug.

Hattie looked at me in the car and then back to Tommy. “Where are you going?”

I pulled a lie out of my bag of tricks. “Errands. I need to get cake mix.”

Tommy turned to glare at me, but said nothing.

“Tommy, come up to the house. Willa can run errands on her own.”

Tommy reached forward and gave her grandmother another hug, then stepped back. “Sorry, Gran, I’m going with Mom. I’ll be by later.”

I saw a trace of disappointment cross Hattie’s face, and then it was gone. She turned on her heel and walked up toward her house.

“Let’s go,” Tommy said, and got in the car.

When we arrived in town, I could already see three young men standing at the side of the convenience store. I pulled around to the front of the parking lot and parked just beside the front doors, where I could see what was going on at the side of the building and yet not look too nosy.

There were three boys leaning against the wall. If I had to guess, I would say they were in their late teens or early twenties They looked older than Tommy, anyway. A white guy with shaggy hair down to his shoulders, blue jeans low on his hips and a black T-shirt with some sort of graphic on it, was smoking a cigarette. His knee was bent and his foot rested on the wall behind him. A Hispanic boy, who wore his hair short on the sides and long on the top like you see in boy bands, was tall and thin and dressed similar to Shaggy except his T-shirt didn’t have any graphics. Standing facing them was a thin Hispanic boy with a military haircut. He wore khaki shorts and a white cotton short-sleeve shirt buttoned all the way up to his Adam’s apple.
